IIE’s Midwifery Training Scholarship and Capacity Building Program seeks to improve maternal health in Mexico by strengthening the midwifery model.
As part of the program, IIE, with the support of the MacArthur Foundation, donated funds to support projects for the creation of institutional capacities and the promotion of the midwifery model in Mexico. The participating institutions offer courses or midwifery programs that allow their graduates to obtain a license to practice in the health system.
In 2017, IIE granted support for 7 projects to 5 institutions located in different states to complete capacity building projects. Each proposal was unique, but worthy of mention are projects oriented at strengthening students’ clinical practice, interinstitutional and intergenerational meetings (students and alumni) to generate joint projects, trainings, feasibility study, and a student exchange pilot program.
In 2018, IIE provided 11 grants to 8 institutions. This year the projects were more oriented to Competency Based Education and fundraising. Other projects seek to carry out meetings to improve interinstitutional collaboration, budget analysis, strengthening of clinical practice and student tutoring programs, an employability study to create strategies to support alumni, and the development of a diploma course on the midwifery model.
