IIE Statement on Natural Disasters in Morocco and Libya

September 13, 2023

We are deeply saddened to witness the devastation of the September 8th earthquake in Morocco and recent floods in Libya. We offer our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the victims.

IIE is taking action to support the unique needs of university students from these and other areas. When emergencies like natural disasters or conflict impact traditional sources of funding, students often find themselves in immediate need – and their education in jeopardy. The IIE Emergency Student Fund quickly distributes grants to international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities when crises hit home.

In the coming days, IIE will launch a special Emergency Student Fund for U.S.-based university and college students from Libya, Morocco, Sudan, and Ukraine. IIENetwork member institutions may nominate Libyan, Moroccan, Sudanese, and Ukrainian students to receive one-time grants to help them cover emergency costs, such as room and board, tuition and fees, and other living expenses.

Thanks to the support of donors and partners in the international higher education community, we are also mobilizing longer-term financial support through initiatives like the Odyssey Scholarship, Scholar Rescue Fund, and Artist Protection Fund.

For more than 100 years, IIE has been a critical resource for students, scholars, and artists in crisis. Please consider contributing to IIE’s Crisis Response which is deployed immediately to students, scholars, and artists where and when it’s needed most.
