IIE Awards 2024 SIO of the Year Award to Jane Gatewood of Emory University

Designation Reflects Dr. Gatewood’s Commitment to Partnerships and Building Institutional Capacity for Global Engagement

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 21, 2025 — The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to award the 2024 Senior International Officer (SIO) of the Year Award to Jane Gatewood, Ph.D., Vice Provost for Global Engagement at Emory University.

Selected by a distinguished panel of peers, honorees are cited for embracing international education and fostering multifaceted, strategic programming that has had significant impact across the institution, building effective administrative structures and mentoring new professionals, among other qualities. IIE created the annual award in its centennial year to recognize SIOs who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in internationalization.

Dr. Gatewood is noted across the field for her profound impact in roles throughout her career spanning 20 years. Most recently, she was elected to serve as the next president of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), which she will begin in March 2025. At the University of Rochester, Dr. Gatewood was the inaugural SIO, laying the groundwork for global engagement strategies and practices that prioritized partnerships and data-driven decision making. In her role there, she created the first campus-wide strategy for global collaboration and led the charge to launch Rochester’s Office for Global Engagement.  During her tenure at UGA, she created one of the first international partnerships units on a U.S. campus, which has gone on to serve as a model nationally.

“Jane is a powerful strategic thinker about ways to grow international exchanges and relationships. She is a true champion of staff development for working in an ever more complex world,” said Allan Goodman, IIE’s CEO.

“I am honored to be selected as this year’s IIE’s Senior International Officer of the Year. Having dedicated the past twenty years to the advancement of international higher education, I am proud to be among peers who are passionate about advocating for internationalization and academic exchange,” shared Dr. Gatewood in accepting the award.  “Through my past work at University of Rochester, I’m reminded of the transformative power of international education, and in my new role with Emory University, I’m excited to continue bringing leadership and mentorship to my field, my colleagues, and the students and scholars that we support.”

Lanny S. Liebeskind, Interim Provost of Emory University, expressed his congratulations as well.  “This well-deserved recognition honors the remarkable impact Jane has had in global education and partnership,” he shared. “Throughout her career, she has distinguished herself as a transformative leader in global engagement, cultivating meaningful opportunities for countless students, faculty and staff. We are proud to have Jane representing Emory and advancing our mission of global impact and excellence in education and research.”

Dr. Gatewood is a recognized pioneer in partnership development, creating invaluable resources for SIOs. She served as Chair of NAFSA’s International Education Leadership Knowledge Community and was a contributing editor of “NAFSA’s Guide to International Partnerships” published in 2020.
