On May 21, 2012, IIE and EducationUSA hosted a national conference call with more than 100 U.S. higher education institutions, government agencies, NGOs and other organizations on “U.S.-Libya Educational Cooperation: New Strategies for Engaging with Libya to Promote Higher Education Cooperation.” The call, hosted by IIE’s President and CEO Allan E. Goodman, featured Samantha Power, Special Assistant to the President of the United States, and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, National Security Council; Joan A. Polaschik, Charge d’Affaires, Deputy Chief of Mission, Office of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Embassy of the United States, Libya, United States Department of State; Dr. Naim Al Gheryani, Libyan Minister of Higher Education; and Dr. Fathi Alkhari, Deputy Minister, Libyan Ministry of Higher Education. The call also featured high-level participation from the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Libyan Ministry of Higher Education.

The IIE-EducationUSA National Conference Call focused U.S. and Libyan efforts to expand education cooperation; the challenges and opportunities to educational cooperation between the two countries; the current and future interest of U.S. higher education institutions in U.S.-Libya academic partnerships; and the Libyan scholarship program.
