2006 International Awards Gala
IIE honored the Freeman Foundation with its Stephen P. Duggan Award for Mutual Understanding in honor of the foundation’s commitment to improving understanding between the United States and Asia. In recent years, the Freeman Foundation has used an innovative model of philanthropy to provide emergency assistance to students from Asia studying in the US on several important occasions, including the Asian currency crises in the late 1990s, the 2004 tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina.
IIE also recognized Edward R. Murrow with the Fritz Redlich Alumni Award, which was accepted by Murrow’s son Casey in honor of his late father. In 1932, Murrow was hired as Assistant Director of IIE, where he arranged for European scholars who were at risk in their home countries to lecture and teach at U.S. colleges and universities, an early forerunner of IIE’s Scholar Rescue Fund. Murrow continued to serve as an IIE Trustee until his death in 1965.
