New York, May 16, 2018 – Displaced students from Afghanistan, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Ukraine, and Yemen will be able to find and apply for scholarships, language learning courses, and other post-secondary educational opportunities through the IIE Platform for Education in Emergencies Response (IIE PEER) starting on Monday, May 28.
There are more than 65 million displaced persons worldwide, and only an estimated 1% have access to higher education, compared to 34% of all young people worldwide. To help to close the gap in educational access, IIE launched IIE PEER in March 2017 to provide displaced students with a mobile-ready, low-bandwidth database of tertiary and non-degree opportunities.
Each week, IIE PEER will release a LinkedIn article to detail the higher education circumstances in each country, share the work being done by other organizations in these regions, and feature educational opportunities for students from each country.
IIE President and CEO, Dr. Allan E. Goodman, speaks more on the need of increased higher education services for displaced students and IIE PEER’s expansion in his article “If Not Now, Then When?”.
To receive more information, watch the IIE PEER Facebook Live event where Nele Feldmann and Sixtine Berquist shared details about IIE’s Student Emergency Initiatives and the IIE PEER expansion.
To stay engaged and participate in the weekly feature articles starting May 28, follow IIE PEER’s LinkedIn Page.
