Fulbright Silvermine Residency Opportunity

Building on the esteemed reputation of the Silvermine Arts Center, this International Artists-in-Residency Program fosters creative,
intellectual and professional growth for emerging and established visual artists. The program is designed to bring residents together with colleagues and masters for intensive focus. Residents have access to professional world-class facilities and studio time, free from everyday pressures. Residents can pursue interdisciplinary projects among a community of working artists, and gain feedback from Silvermine Instructors and prominent Visiting Artists through constructive critiques. The campus setting is specifically designed to
aid artists in the production of their work and allow them to take risks and pursue new projects and ideas.

This residency is made possible through a donation to IIE’s Centennial Fund in honor of Janet Hennessey Dilenschneider.

Fulbright Silvermine Residency Details

Candidates have the opportunity to meet independent goals during a four-week residency period. The artist will have the option of focused study in the following mediums: Painting & Drawing; Metal Sculpture; Jewelry; Ceramics; Printmaking; Film & Digital Photography; Furniture Design & Woodworking; New Media or Digital Arts.

  • Artists are provided 300 sq. ft. of private workspace with abundant natural light and artificial light. The studio is accessible 8 am to 10 pm, 7 days a week for the duration of the residency.
  • Silvermine instructors, guild members and visiting artists will offer optional studio visits for open dialogue and critiques.
  • Career mentoring from Silvermine staff is available as part of our residency program. Roger Mudre, Gallery Director, and Kelly O’Sullivan, Arts Education Manager will be available for conversations about the artist’s project. Roger is responsible for gallery exhibitions and is a practicing artist. Kelly oversees the school’s programming and can assist the candidate in the specifics of their studies.
  • Artists may audit any class or workshop during their residency.
  • Artists have the opportunity to visit art collections at several local museums and galleries.
  • Artists will be encouraged to present an artist talk about their current work and practice.
  • Artists will have the opportunity for their work to be curated in either a solo or a group exhibition scheduled at a later date in the Silvermine Galleries.

Studio Details

Each studio is equipped with a sink, easel, taborrett, chair, stool, drawing bench, drying rack, wall space, and a large table for flat work.

  • Sculpture Studio: Fully equipped with stationary power tools, welding equipment, low-fire electric kiln, as well as bronze casting foundry. Resident training is required to use these studios.
  • Printmaking Studio: Located in the main school building, the press room offers functional space for up to 6 printmakers. The shop is set up for mono-printing, wood block, linoleum, dry point, non-toxic etching and collagraph printing. Resident training is required to use these studios.
  • Photography/Darkroom: The photography studio is fully equipped for black-and-white printing only. Some chemistry is provided by Silvermine, but photographers should bring camera, film, and paper.
  • Digital Lab: Newly renovated lab with 8 Mac computers, 8 Wacom Pro Digital Graphic Drawing Tablets, printers, scanner, and projector. Application software includes the complete Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp.
  • Jewelry Studio: Equipped with soldering station, pickle pot & soldering accessories, 4 flex shaft, polishing motor, Italian cavallin rolling mill, bench sheer, vcella enameling kiln and sanding polishing, drilling & setting supplies
  • Ceramic Studio: Equipped with 11 Skutt electric wheels, slab roller, extruders and cone 10 glaze room. An electric kiln as available for low and mid-range firings, a gas kiln is available for high-fire and raku and soda kilns are available for alternative firing methods.
  • Woodshop: A new woodshop is equipped with state-of-the-art power tools, stationary and hand tools and lathes for woodturning. Resident training is required to use this studio.
