Summer Program Options

Fellows’ projects may include internships, service-learning, and volunteer opportunities. Non-governmental organizations located in each destination will host the fellows. The organizations may be local or global.
Applicants may either select a pre-existing program they’d like to participate in or work with IIE to be placed at an NGO in Ethiopia, Mexico, or Southeast Asia. Placements will be made after Fellows are selected. Review the options below.
Participate in a pre-identified program (a program that you have applied to or been accepted to), through your university or through an established program – such as a study abroad organization, an international volunteer organization, or an overseas university.
- Type of Program: As long as your host organization has an experiential learning and development focus (broadly defined), you may apply for funding. Study abroad programs comprised of classroom study only will not be funded. Applicants should discuss options with their advisors, departments, and study abroad offices.
- Funding: The Fellowship will provide funding for up to 4 weeks of your program. You may participate in a longer program at your own expense. See the Benefits section for more information.
- Timing: Must be in summer 2025, and at least four weeks of the international program must be after July 1.
- Eligible Example: You have an overseas summer internship from June 20 to August 10. At least 4-weeks of this program takes place after July 1.
- Ineligible Example: You have an overseas internship from June 1 to July 10. While this program is long enough, it does not take place during the correct time frame.
- Where: Most Fellows will be based in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, but if the program is in a different international location, and focuses on international development, you may still apply for funding.
IIE will place you with an appropriate host organization.
- Type of Organization: The organization will have a development focus. Placements may be internship or service learning/volunteer project-oriented.
- Where: Ethiopia, Mexico, or Southeast Asia. You will have an opportunity to indicate your preference in the application. IIE cannot guarantee that everyone will be placed in their top location choice.
- When: Mid-July to Mid-August for 4 weeks.
- Housing and Visas: IIE will provide information to Fellows to assist in applying for visas and finding appropriate housing.
- University Credit: Fellows will need to speak to their home institutions about possible credits. IIE cannot guarantee that participants will receive credits.
- Language Skills: Spanish language skills may be required for placement in Mexico.
