Melanie Sanders-Smith to Join the Institute of International Education as Vice President for International Strategic Initiatives

WASHINGTON, DC, May 13, 2010—The Institute of International Education is pleased to welcome Melanie Sanders-Smith back to IIE as the global organization’s new Vice President for International Strategic Initiatives. Ms. Sanders-Smith first joined IIE in 1998 and from 1999 through 2002, led IIE’s implementation of the $120 million USAID-funded Development Training 2 program in Egypt. The project, which trained tens of thousands of professionals, focused on development challenges faced by Egypt.

Ms. Sanders-Smith’s experience outside of IIE spans the globe, providing management and technical services to USAID and its implementing partners for over 25 years. Most recently she worked at Chemonics International where she was the founding director of their education practice and directed several large-scale projects in the West Bank and the Philippines. Prior to that, Ms. Sanders-Smith was executive vice president at Development Associates and worked with USAID in South Africa. She has also served as co-chair for the Society for International Development working group on education for development.  She holds an M.A. in Political Science with an international development focus, as well as a B.A. in International Relations from Brigham Young University.

Ms. Sanders-Smith will be based in IIE’s Washington office and will provide high-level oversight to IIE’s international offices. She will expand the support provided to these offices, increasing IIE’s ability to effectively manage programs and to share the story of our sponsor’s and donor’s successes. Ms. Sanders-Smith will also be responsible for developing strategic initiatives, including expansion of the Institute’s international programs, partnerships, and sponsors.

IIE has a network of 18 international offices around the world, with regional centers and country offices in The Americas, Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South and Central Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific. Each office utilizes strong networks of colleges, universities, and NGOs in the region to implement initiatives driven by key regional needs and the goals of sponsors; these offices are central to administering many prestigious global programs, with the goal of preparing individuals and institutions to become leaders in the globalized world.

As a result of the Institute’s partnerships with corporations, governments, ministries, foundations, and the U.S. government, thousands of students, scholars, and professionals each year gain access to the world’s leading higher education and training programs. Through IIE’s global network of offices, the Institute’s expert professional staff works with sponsors, universities, and other institutions to implement and manage initiatives focused on scholarship management, scholar and professional exchanges, leadership development, and institutional capacity building.  IIE also administers 14 Regional Educational Advising Coordinators who provide training, resources and mentoring to support the U.S. Department of State's network of EducationUSA advisers around the world.
