Institute of International Education Launches Center for International Partnerships in Higher Education

Assisting Universities and Colleges to Establish and Sustain Institutional Partnerships Worldwide

The Institute of International Education (IIE), a world leader in the exchange of students and scholars, is pleased to announce the establishment of the IIE Center for International Partnerships in Higher Education, to assist colleges and universities in developing and sustaining institutional partnerships with their counterparts around the world.

Higher education institutions are increasingly seeking out partnerships with counterparts in other countries to enhance academic collaboration, expand curricular offerings, advance joint research, and prepare their students with the international experiences and cross-cultural tools needed in their careers. However, many institutions face significant challenges in navigating education systems in other countries, identifying appropriate partners and developing effective institutional partnership strategies. Consolidating many new and existing activities, the IIE Center will help faculty and administrators, policymakers and practitioners to address these challenges by providing the following resources and initiatives:

Leading delegations of U.S. higher education leaders to China, India, Indonesia and other countries where American institutions are seeking partnerships. Organizing U.S. study tours for higher education administrators and experts from around the world to enrich their understanding of U.S. higher education's diversity and bring them together with potential partners. Providing advice and liaison services through IIE's network of international offices and partners. Collecting and disseminating best practices in developing institutional linkages and programs. Convening conferences and symposia of international educators and other leaders in the field. Producing timely policy research papers on critical issues such as U.S.-India educational exchange, higher education in the Middle East, and transatlantic joint and double degree programs. Providing services to newly established academic institutions around the world.A major new initiative of the IIE Center this fall will be the International Academic Partnerships Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), to increase the number of international partnerships between higher education institutions in the U.S. and those in other countries. Through this program, IIE will convene an expert advisory group, develop an international partnership service for a pilot group of twenty U.S. institutions, conduct study tours to India and China to explore partnership opportunities, and create an online International Academic Partnership portal to provide training materials and information resources on establishing institutional partnerships.

The International Academic Partnerships Program focuses its initial activities on two key countries, India and China, which are the leading places of origin for international students in the United States and have seen dramatic increases in hosting U.S. study abroad students in recent years, according to IIE's Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, an ongoing research project supported by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. IIE's in-country offices and partners will play an important role in helping guide this initiative and providing insight into the higher education landscape in these two countries, both of which are investing heavily in higher education and are promoting linkage activities internationally.
