2006 Heiskell Award Honorable Mention: Study Abroad

Glendale Community College

The Baja California Field Studies Program: Field-Based International Education for Community College Students

Nomination submitted by: José A. Mercadé, Director, Baja California Field Studies Program

Program Overview
Introducing students to field work in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, the Baja California Field Studies Program has served more than 6,000 community college students over the course of its 32 years. Through a college-run field station on the Baja peninsula, students collaborate with members of the local community for language study and fieldwork. Students and faculty jointly plan and organize each class, building a sense of community that enhances learning and strengthens students’ commitment to the program. Without the Baja field studies program many of the participants would otherwise never have been able to study abroad. Some marks of the program’s success include its deep roots in the host region, its longevity and popularity, and partnerships it has developed with other area colleges to increase the number of students it serves.
