Seth R. Bergstein is a Managing Director and Head of the Global Services Group in Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley in New York. Mr. Bergstein founded the Firm’s global effort in the services space in 2001 and is responsible for the coverage of companies providing professional services, information technology, business process outsourcing, processing, data & analytics and business services. Mr. Bergstein has been a member of the Management Committee of Investment Banking since 2008.
Mr. Bergstein and his team advise management teams and boards of directors of large, mid and small capitalization companies, both publicly and privately held, regarding shareholder value creation and related activities including debt and equity capital raising, capital structure, mergers and acquisitions, and restructuring. Mr. Bergstein also has worked with many financial sponsors and their portfolio companies to pursue strategic objectives and grow businesses.
Over the last 12 years, he has been involved in $25BN of capital raising and $75BN of M&A for companies in the United States, Europe, Japan, India, China and Brazil. Several of these transactions have been market defining at the time of their completion and several have been named Deal of the Year. Notable deals include initial public offerings for Tata Consultancy Services (2004), Genpact Limited (2007), Verisk Analytics (2009), Emdeon Business Services (2009), Amadeus IT Holdings (2010), Booz Allen Hamilton (2010) and Vantiv Corporation (2011), the spin-off’s of Western Union (2006) and Broadridge Financial Solutions (2006), and Cap Gemini’s acquisition of Kanbay (2006) and Experian’s acquisition of Serasa (2007). Deals of the Year include the sale of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting to IBM Corporation (2002), the sale of First Data to KKR (2007), and the sale of General Atlantic and Oak Hill stakes in Genpact Limited to Bain Capital (2012).
After graduating from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in Economics, Psychology and Cognitive Science in 1988, Mr. Bergstein joined Morgan Stanley as a Financial Analyst in Corporate Finance. In 1990, he left to attend The J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He graduated in 1992 with a Masters in Management degree and rejoined Morgan Stanley in New York. From 1993 - 2001, Mr. Bergstein was based in Chicago where he advised industrial, manufacturing, consumer, financial, technology and advertising companies in the Midwest Region including Grainger, Ford Motor Company, CDW, Motorola, and Leo Burnett.
Mr. Bergstein, and his wife Alexandra Mochary Bergstein, live in Greenwich, CT, with their three children, William (15), Max (13) and Ellie (9). They support numerous philanthropic causes with a focus on education, welfare and children’s health. Mr. Bergstein is a board member of the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services and a Trustee of the Institute of International Education.
