Government Partners

The United States Government, especially the Department of State, and over 140 governments worldwide are key partners with IIE in the implementation of educational exchange, leadership development, and professional training programs.

For more than 60 years, IIE has collaborated with the U.S. Department of State in the administration of some of the most renowned international exchange programs. The Institute has had the honor of administering the Fulbright Program since 1946. IIE also works closely with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to administer the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships, the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program, and the International Visitors Leadership Program, as well as conduct the annual Open Doors survey of international student mobility.

IIE also partners with other U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education, USAID, and the National Security Education Program (NSEP), whose Boren Scholarship, Boren Fellowship, and The Language Flagship programs provide opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad and add an important international and language component to their education in areas of the world that are underrepresented in study abroad and critical to U.S. security interests.

The Institute is also proud of its strong relationships with government partners around the world that contribute to Fulbright and other IIE-administered exchange, training, and higher education research efforts. These include the governments of Brazil, Mexico, Panama, Italy, India, Japan, Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, China, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, for such projects as those sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry of Education/Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) Foundation, the Japan Intercultural Academy of Municipalities (JIAM), and the Republic of Korea Ministry of Government Administration.
