About Malaysia

Successfully positioning itself as a global education hub in recent years for international students from within and outside Asia, Malaysia has set a goal to host 250,000 international students by the year 2025.


Fast Facts: Malaysia

  • There were 35,592 international students in Malaysia in 2014.
  • The top five places of origin in 2014 were Bangladesh, China, Indonesia and Nigeria.
  • Over 56,000 Malaysian students pursued a degree aboard. The top destinations include: the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and Egypt.

Definitions

Outbound student: Malaysian students pursuing full-degree programs or post-graduates abroad. This does not include students who attend short-term courses overseas.

Private HEI: Organizations or educational institutions, including universities, colleges, and branch campuses approved and registered under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 (Act 555) which is not established or maintained by the Government.
