The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) is the entity in Japan responsible for tracking and analyzing both inbound international student and outbound student mobility trends. Data have been collected from HEIs via annual surveys from 1985 to the current year. Data is collected from HEIs via annual surveys. In turn, the Ministry of Education (Policy Planning and Coordination Division, Lifelong Learning Policy Bureau) reports international student and out-bound mobility data to international organizations such as UNESCO and OECD.

Data are collected on: gender; field of study; academic level; type of host institution attended; and degree/qualification/credential awarded.
