About USIPP

The U.S. - Indonesia Partnership Program (USIPP), funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) from 2010 - 2012 and administered by IIE, brought together six U.S. and six Indonesian higher education institutions to develop bilateral partnerships. The main goal of the grant was to increase U.S. study abroad to Indonesia through new, innovative programs.

Throughout the grant period, the twelve participating institutions participated in two major workshops: the first in Bandung, Indonesia (2011) and the second in Washington, DC (2012). The workshops focused on building study abroad hosting capacity at Indonesian institutions, U.S. and Indonesian priorities for developing partnerships, best practices in bilateral academic collaboration, and ways to maintain mutually beneficial and sustainable linkages.

USIPP yielded a number of concrete results that contributed directly to the 2010 Comprehensive Partnership Agreement, signed by Presidents Obama and Yudhoyono. These include:

  • Developed four new U.S. study abroad programs to Indonesia, with 38 U.S. and 17 Indonesian students participating in these programs.
  • Authored two white papers presenting the challenges, opportunities and strategies for increasing U.S study abroad to Indonesia and disseminated each to more than 1000 study abroad professionals.
  • • Increased awareness at higher education institutions in both countries of the benefits of U.S. – Indonesia academic collaboration.
  • Built new partnerships between the USIPP participating institutions; many of whom plan to continue working on their study abroad program in addition to other collaborative activities.
  • Established preliminary framework for the U.S. – Indonesia Higher Education Consortium (USIPP Consortium)
