Maintaining Full-Time Status and Remaining in Good Standing
All grantees in the J-1 Exchange Visitor category are required to be enrolled as full-time during the academic portion of their authorized program. When registering for classes, it is the grantees' responsibility to check with their academic advisor and/or international student advisor to review their course load and ensure that it meets this requirement, and any other minimum academic requirements set by the host institution.
According to BSMP policy, all grantees are required to comply with the academic standards of their host institution at all times. Grantees will be subject to the penalties of their host institution for any violation of its academic policies. If grantees do not maintain full-time status or if they are dismissed from their host institution for any reason, including academic performance, they are effectively ending their BSMP scholarship and will need to return to Brazil immediately.
Add/Drop Period and Course Withdrawals
There is a period during the academic semester (usually within the first week or two) when students are allowed to add or drop classes without penalties. Each host institution has its own procedures for successfully and officially adding/dropping a class during its designated period without penalties or necessary advisor approval. If grantees decide to add/drop a class after this period, they must contact their academic advisor and/or international student advisor or registrar’s office for guidance. In general, after the add/drop period, it will not be possible to add or drop a class by simply emailing or speaking with a professor.
