Mihret is from a semi-rural area of Ethiopia where she passed her 10th and 12th grade national exams successfully. She is now studying at Adama University, pursuing her dream to be a doctor. In her own words: “In 7 years’ time, I will be a doctor and work in a hospital and save lives. I also plan to go abroad for a graduate degree and visit my country to help orphan children.” Mihret is one of a 100 girls in Ethiopia that IIE is helping stay on a pathway to success through the Higher Education Readiness (HER) program. HER is just one example of the Institute’s targeted approach to increasing female access to education and developing leadership skills. Last year alone, IIE-managed programs directly impacted the lives of 20,000 women and girls all over the world.
This past September IIE joined the Clinton Foundation and the Brookings Institution’s Collaborative for Harnessing Ambition and Resources for Girls’ Education (Girls CHARGE). Girls CHARGE is a collaboration of over 50 companies, civil society organizations, multilaterals and governments all committed to improving learning and leadership opportunities for young women and girls globally. IIE and our Center for Women’s Leadership Initiatives are excited to be a part of such a powerful collective voice in advancing global action on women and girls education. Girls CHARGE partners have committed over $800 million to reach more than 15 million girls by 2019. IIE’s initial commitment is centered around expanding our HER program to help university become a reality for more than 60 girls in Ethiopia. Three of the HER girls received the highest university entrance exam results at their respective schools!
At the end of this month 100 HER girls in Ethiopia from Addis Ketema and Fittawarari will graduate from high school. We are proud of their accomplishments and excited about their futures! IIE is now raising funds to assist with their transition to university, and we invite you to lend your support by making a donation by June 15.
Two hundred girls in the Addis Ketema and Fitawrari high schools have now been awarded HER! An important component of the Higher Education Readiness (HER) program is communication and involvement of the parents, because as we know, if they are not supportive, the likelihood of the girls staying in school is minimal.
Every year in March, IIE celebrates International Women's Day by sharing about the bright young participants of IIE's Center for Women's Leadership Initiatives.
IIE is excited to announce that an additional 100 girls were awarded IIE's Higher Education Readiness (HER) scholarship. These 11th grade girls (fifty each from Fitawrari and Addis Ketema schools) should be proud of their accomplishments. They were selected by an independent review panel consisting of Ethiopian leaders in the non-profit and private sectors. The panelists chose the next round of HER girls based on academic successes, financial need, and potential for leadership. After a thorough review of all the submitted applications, the review panel submitted the final list for IIE review and notification to the selected girls and schools.
The HER girls, participants of IIE’s Higher Education Readiness (HER) program, have been busy over the past few months with tutoring, meeting with their mentors, and the important year-end exams. This summer they are attending entrepreneurship and English language training workshops.
This past September, 100 underserved girls in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia—50 from Addis Ketema School and 50 from Fitawrari Abayneh School—were awarded the Higher Education Readiness (HER) Scholarship. The scholarship provides the girls with financial support combined with innovative leadership and life skills training to help them complete their secondary education and equip them with the tools needed to continue on to university.
The HER girls recently received their scores for the Ethiopian National Exam. This exam is taken by all 10th grade Ethiopians and their numerical score determines whether they move forward to the 11th grade in high school, move to a vocational school or stop going to school and enter the workplace. The exam is comprehensive and Ethiopian students do as much as they can to prepare themselves, such as undertake extra tutoring. For students in IIE’s Higher Education Readiness (HER) Program, IIE held after school tutoring programs and tried to prep the girls on exam taking.
This summer has been a busy but exciting one for the girls in IIE’s Higher Education Readiness (HER) program. After IIE "trained the trainers," which I detailed in my previous blog, this summer we have focused on working with the girls on leadership and life skills development and English language training.
